Disaster looms large in all of this week’s featured new movies on VOD. In the Halle Berry-led Moonfall, the Earth is on the edge of destruction when she discovers that the Moon is about to crash into it, and only she can save us. If it’s smaller-scale disasters you’re looking for, look no further than Jackass Forever, where a group of men (and now also a woman) try to destroy their bodies for our amusement.

In The Contractor, disaster is also striking Chris Pine (is he the best Chris now, is that where we landed?) and he finds himself as a soldier running for his life. Pine stars as a Special Forces Sergeant who is discharged from the Army with no pension, and as a result, he is desperate for money to support his family. When he’s offered a contract with a mysterious, secret military group, he jumps at the chance, but his assignment is compromised and he finds himself on the run from his new employers. The film co-stars Kiefer Sutherland, Ben Foster, Gillian Jacobs and Eddie Marsan.

Moonfall

Moonfall is action director Roland Emmerich’s latest project, and it has everything you want from an apocalyptic-destructoporn movie: winky jokes about the end of humanity, large-scale CGI, and a ridiculous premise that’s so dumb that it’s fun. Halle Berry is a former NASA astronaut who’s the only person who can save the Earth when it turns out that the Moon is out of orbit. Working with her old colleague Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and a conspiracy theorist, K.C. Houseman (John Bradley), the three need to save the world and, yeah, that song you hear in the trailer is “Bad Moon Rising” because these folks are gonna kick that bad moon’s ass.

Jackass Forever is yet another installment in the Jackass-iverse. (In 2022, we add “-iverse” to every film franchise now.) Johnny Knoxville and his crew of daredevils has expanded to perform dozens of hilarious stunts that put their bodies and their pride in danger. Tune in, because now that the gang is getting gray around the temples, this might just be their last go around for getting bashed in the nuts.
