‘Wham!’
I’m no Wham!-head, and yet I thoroughly enjoyed Netflix’s new documentary about the ’80s pop band. Sure, it’s riding the over-long wave of ’80s nostalgia that Stranger Things hath wrought, but it’s also an engaging story of musicians George Micheal and Andrew Ridgeley’s four-year journey from nobodies to pop superstars. Everyone knows the name George Michael (who died suddenly in 2016), but it’s fascinating to hear Ridgeley’s side of the story, who, in fact, was originally the band leader. But it’s Michael’s archived BBC interview that truly makes the film, in which he’s surprisingly candid about everything from his sexuality to his true feelings on “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”
