Earlier this year, Drew Barrymore surprised Jennifer Garner with balloons, a holiday in her hometown, a key to the city and a pricey donation to Save the Children in honor of the actress’ 51st birthday. But according to a new Vulture profile, Barrymore was second-guessing the extravagant interview almost as soon as it ended.
The beloved Drew Barrymore Show host made the private, off-camera confession to that day’s live audience once Garner had left the stage.
“I will just be totally honest with you guys,” she said. “Making this show makes me have these personal whirlwinds. Like, I really want to make a very personal show, and I totally fucking spiraled after Jennifer Garner.”
Barrymore admitted to hearing “negative voices” in her head telling her she was “making a mess of everything” because she’s a “messy person,” while she sees Garner as a “poised” woman.
Despite wanting to “run away and cry,” Barrymore said she couldn’t do that because she was at work.
“Like, there’s nothing I can do but just walk through it and feel my own discomfort. And hope I didn’t put anyone else in an uncomfortable situation,” she explained, before asking the audience, “Does anyone ever have those episodes where, like, all of a sudden nothing they can do is right and everything is just more evidence about what a crazy weirdo you are?”

After one audience member yelled, “All the time!” Barrymore praised the “energy” in the room.
“I will carry each one of you in my heart, and I will never forget today, because today proved if you risk telling your truth, if you don’t just always try to fake it till you make it, it can be safe and it can be okay,” she said. “So thank you for that life-affirming truth.”
Later that day, the 50 First Dates star watched a clip of her segment with Garner — who joked that she was “so freaked out over what” Barrymore was “gonna do next” following her multiple surprises.
“Poor thing,” Barrymore said. “I really hard-launched on her.”
