‘You Hurt My Feelings’
Now available to stream on VOD services at home, Nicole Holofcener‘s latest dramedy, You Hurt My Feelings, is a fascinating look at the ways the little white lies we tell can snowball into a situation we lose control of entirely. It makes you wonder if honesty really is the best policy. Memoirist-turned-novelist Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and therapist Don (Tobias Menzies) have a quiet, if co-dependent, marriage. When Beth overhears Don tell her brother-in-law that he doesn’t like her new novel, it… well, it breaks her, even if Don has no idea why she’s acting so odd. As Beth’s sister and brother-in-law, Michaela Watkins and Arian Moayed (who is hilarious in a role that couldn’t be more different from his in Succession) provide the perfect contrast to Beth and Don in the ways they approach similar situations. Standout supporting performances by David Cross, Zach Cherry, and Jeannie Berlin make the world of the movie even richer, letting viewers see even further into the slice of Beth and Don’s life. But overall, You Hurt My Feelings is a reminder that Louis-Dreyfus is still one of the best around.
