It looks like Freaky Friday 2 is good to go! Well, as soon as the writers strike comes to an end.

“Oh, it’ll happen. For sure. Oh, for sure. There’s no question,” original movie star Jamie Lee Curtis recently told Entertainment Weekly.

But the Oscar-winning actress pointed to the WGA strike as one of the reasons why development has (temporarily) stalled on the film.

“Stories require writers, and right now there are no writers because they’re all fighting for their lives, for their creative lives, for their emotional lives, and for their financial lives,” Curtis said.

She continued, “We’re in the middle of a contract dispute. And so, until those writers get paid correctly and protected by the producers that make billions off of them, we will not be able to tell you any more about the Freaky Friday sequel, except that it is happening.”

Writers have been on strike since contract negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers fell through in early May. Their demands include implementing stricter AI regulations and fairer pay in the age of digital streaming.

Freaky Friday 2 isn’t the only project to be affected by the strike; development for Stranger Things Season 5 and The Last of Us Season 2 has since stalled, and even Saturday Night Live canceled the rest of its season. SAG-AFTRA members have even threatened to strike.

But everyone appears to be on board to make Freaky Friday 2 happen. Lindsay Lohan has even expressed interest in reprising her role for the sequel, telling The New York Times in early May, “Jamie and I are both open to that, so we’re leaving it in the hands that be. We would only make something that people would absolutely adore.”

In Freaky Friday, the pair played a mother and daughter who swap places after encountering a magical fortune cookie. What happens next changes their fraught relationship for the better after they see what life is like in the other person’s shoes.

It may be some time before we do get to see Freaky Friday 2, but for now, Lohan can be seen in the 2022 holiday romcom Falling for Christmas, while Curtis is slated to lead Haunted Mansion.

Freaky Friday is available to stream on Disney+.
