Justina Machado leads Prime Video‘s new creepy dramedy The Horror of Dolores Roach, which is based on Aaron Mark’s Spotify podcast and one-woman play. The first season premiered on the streamer on July 7, 2023 with eight episodes and a twisty ending. Now, viewers are hungry for more.

The show follows Machado as the titular character, who is fresh out of prison. She returns to her home in Washington Heights and finds the entire neighborhood gentrified. Struggling to find a place to live and a job, she reunites with her old friend Luis (Alejandro Hernandez) and moves into the basement underneath his empanada restaurant.

Dolores begins to offer $20 massages to customers and invests in her future as a professional masseuse. Her plan unravels after a greedy landlord propositions her for sex. In a fit of rage, she murders the older man, which unleashes a hunt for answers from his son. Through it all, Dolores is also on the search for her former lover Dominic (Anthony Grant) after he abandoned her once she took the fall for his failed drug deal. Meanwhile, Luis disposes of the landlord’s body by baking it into his empanadas, which turn out to be a massive hit for the restaurant.

The series has a lot going on, from romance to gory murders to hot, cannibalistic sex, and the ending sets up for more to come. Curious about the fate of this dark show? Here’s everything we know about the future of The Horror of Dolores Roach. This article continues spoilers for the show’s finale.

Has The Horror of Dolores Roach Been Renewed on Prime Video? Will There Be A Dolores Roach Season 2?

The Horror of Dolores Roach has not yet been renewed on Prime Video, but don’t fret as the series is still quite new to the platform. If the streamer decides to renew the show for a second season, they will share the news within the next few months. As of now, Prime Video has only canceled one television show in 2023, which is the Alfred Molina-led crime series Three Pines. That said, the fate of many original shows still remain in question, including I’m A Virgo, Daisy Jones and the Six and Class of ‘07.

Looking on the bright side, the last episode of the series sets up for more seasons to come. After a bloody meltdown results in three new deaths, the show revisits Dolores in the present day where she is chatting with the actor portraying her in a Broadway play. The murderer discovers that her former neighbor/noisy podcaster Caleb (Jeffery Self) is responsible for the show and she tracks him down. Once Dolores locates Caleb, she begins to choke him but is stopped after he mutters Dominic’s name. The playwright claims to know someone who can give answers about her former lover. Caleb directs Dolores to a house in a suburban-like neighborhood and she asks, “Who’s house is this?” Caleb encourages her to knock on the door.

Dolores approaches the house and rings the doorbell, and when the door is answered, she begins to laugh maniacally. She suddenly stops and launches at the other person. The scene cuts to black and it is never revealed who is on the other side of the door.

While there are no hints to the future of this season and being left on a cliffhanger doesn’t guarantee a second outing, there is promise in that the show is an adaptation of a podcast by Marks and the podcast has two complete seasons. The second season of the podcast sees Dolores hiding in an abandoned subway tunnel with a group of “similarly self-exiled tunnel-dwellers.” The synopsis teases, “Facing re-incarceration back above ground, but pushed to the limits of shame, paranoia, lust, hunger, and depraved entrepreneurialism below it, Dolores is the outcast of the outcasts again – until she takes her survival in the tunnels into her own Magic Hands.”

The Horror of Dolores Roach is currently streaming on Prime Video.
