Fear the Walking Dead is back for its final season on AMC, but the show is — as usual — taking its time returning all the main characters to the screen. After last week’s premiere reintroduced us to Morgan (Lennie James), Madison (Kim Dickens), and Grace (Karen David) after a seven-year time jump, this week it’s June’s (Jenna Elfman) turn. And in Decider’s exclusive look at the episode, June has definitely taken a turn for the worse over the past seven years.

In the scene, June’s cabin is invaded by a mysterious stranger named Adrian, played by Fear newcomer Jonathan Medina. June is quick to pull a gun on him, but he’s just looking for help, specifically for his daughter Anna. But June isn’t having any of it and keeps telling the man dressed in fatigues how little she cares about his story. That’s when he drops the name PADRE, aka this season’s big bad villain, an organization that steals children from their parents and trains them to be independent child soldiers.

“You’ve got that jar,” Adrian says. “I know you can help me.”

…and just a note on that: without getting into spoilers, Adrian’s confusing statement about June’s jar plays in big in this week’s episode, in a horrifying way you won’t expect. But back to the scene, we get more info about this new June, who isn’t just completely cut off from the rest of humanity — she doesn’t even want to know them. This seems a far cry from the nurse we’ve known for the past few seasons, who cared passionately about her group, the love of her life, and others. Even when she was broken, June was driven — but here she’s seemingly given up completely.

Or has she? By the end of the scene, Adrian has shown off a picture of Anna and seems to be winning June over to his mission. Will she help him? And if so, is it a trap? You’ll have to check out the scene, and then watch the episode to find out.

Here’s the official synopsis for this week’s Fear the Walking Dead:

Episode 802 – “Blue Jay” – Premieres Sunday, May 21 at 9pm ET/8c on AMC and AMC+

After fleeing PADRE, June’s safety and solitude is threatened by an unwelcome reunion and a desperate father’s search for his missing daughter.

ABOUT: The eighth season begins after the conclusion of Season 7, when Morgan’s (Lennie James) and Madison’s (Kim Dickens) hopes to rescue Mo from PADRE did not go as planned. Now, Morgan, Madison and the others they brought to the island are living under PADRE’s cynical rule. With our characters demoralized and dejected, the task of reigniting belief in a better world rests with the person Morgan and Madison set out to rescue in the first place — Morgan’s daughter, Mo.
