One of the greatest love stories in The Walking Dead universe is between Morgan Jones (Lennie James) and Grace Mukherjee (Karen David) on Fear the Walking Dead. Over the course of multiple seasons, the broken characters have found and lost each other multiple times — but when Season 7 ended, it seemed like they would always find each other again, regardless of circumstances. By the end of the Season 8 premiere, though, thanks to a seven-year-long time-jump, it instead seems like they may never be together again.

Don’t worry, though. According to James, nothing could keep Morgan from loving Grace.

“Morgan loves Grace,” James told Decider definitively. “There’s no question about that. The two most important living people for Morgan at this particular time are Grace and Baby Mo.”

After Grace lost her own baby in a harrowing and intricate storyline, she initially rejected raising the foundling Baby Mo with Morgan. But over time, the two became surrogate parents for the post-apocalyptic baby, even raising her inside a broken down and beached nuclear submarine. But by the end of Season 7, Morgan and Grace had been separated (again), and Baby Mo had been taken by the mysterious organization PADRE.

When Season 8 opens, the time jump reveals that though Morgan did get Baby Mo back, the victory was short-lived. Ultimately he gave Mo back to PADRE in order to guarantee her safety. And over the course of the past seven years, while Baby Mo has grown up into eight-year-old Mo, Morgan and Grace have both begun working for PADRE, unable to see their child. That is, until Mo (Zoey Merchant) finds Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) locked up under PADRE, and the two track down Morgan once again.

The reunion is short-lived once they return to the swamp home Morgan and Baby Mo used to live in, which was overrun by zombies, leading to Morgan turning over Mo to PADRE. This time, it’s Madison who nearly dies; only to be saved at the last moment by Grace. What follows is a heartbreaking scene for fans of Morgan and Grace as a couple, as the two watch Mo once again taken in by PADRE, along with Madison, and they barely look at each other; let alone touch.

“He loves her, [and] has probably loved her every day since he first met her,” James continued. “He just couldn’t allow himself to see it and allow himself to feel it. And he still feels it after all these seven years. But they made a choice and they made a decision. And in this world in which they live, sometimes the best decisions aren’t decisions you make for yourself, they’re decisions you make for someone else.

“So I think what was tricky but important [in] playing the scenes with Karen is playing not just the distance between them, but the pain of that distance between them. Making that real, making that tangible, the fact that the situation they’re in isn’t a situation they wanted, even though it was a situation they chose.”

So will Grace and Morgan break free of PADRE’s hold? Will they reunite with no-long-a-Baby Mo? And most importantly, will they finally kiss?? With only 11 episodes left before the series ends, stay tuned.
