How Do HBO Max Subscribers Migrate to Max?

Where to Stream:

The Last of Us

While the new Warner Bros. streaming platform Max comes with many exciting developments — including a second Game of Thrones prequel — it also leaves current HBO Max subscribers with one major question: How will this affect me? Thankfully, the media company has us covered.

The new streamer will combine content from HBO Max and Discovery+, and is set to launch on May 23 with the tagline, “the one to watch.”

During a press event on Wednesday (April 12), a spokesperson explained that Max will “set the standard across all genres of entertainment” by offering content from both platforms and will mark the end of HBO Max.

The combination of platforms will allow viewers to enjoy the monumental releases of HBO Max original shows — like Succession, The Last of Us and The White Lotus — while also showcasing the casual offerings from Discovery+, such as reality and home improvement programs.

Max will also house several new original shows, including the DC series The Penguin, a spin-off of The Big Bang Theory and “fresh take” on The Conjuring.

Now, this may leave you thinking, “Oh golly, this is going to cost me!” or even “I’m soooo comfortable with my current streaming routine, I don’t want to change it!” And, well, I get it, but if it’s any consolation, Warner Bros. has promised to make this an easy transition.

Curious about migrating from one streamer to the other? Here’s everything you need to know.

How Do HBO Max Subscribers Migrate to Max?

What do you need to do to migrate from HBO Max to Max? The answer is quite simple: You don’t need to lift a finger.

When Max launches on May 23, the HBO Max app will automatically become Max. Some subscribers will have to do nothing at all, while others may be prompted to download the new Max app because of technical issues on their device. Nevertheless, the process should be simple.

During the media event, a spokesperson said, “Regardless of migration patterns, all HBO Max subscribers, usernames, and passwords will carry over automatically. Their profiles, watch histories, and billing will seamlessly transition.”

The spokesperson also stated that Discovery+ subscribers will be unaffected by these changes, due to Discovery+ remaining a standalone platform throughout the launch, unlike HBO Max, which will cease to exist.

Current HBO Max subscribers should receive an email with this information prior to this launch.

How Much Will A Max Subscription Cost?

Given that the HBO Max to Max transition is automatic, it only makes sense that the prices are the same. If you were thinking that, you’d be correct! The ad-free version of Max will cost $15.99 per month — which is the current ad-free price of HBO Max — and offers HD quality, two concurrent streams and 30 downloads.

The new streamer will offer two additional price tiers, including an ad-lite plan at $9.99 per month, which includes HD quality and two concurrent streams. The priciest plan is $19.99 for an ultimate plan, which includes 4K/HDR quality with Dolby Atmos, four concurrent streams and up to 100 downloads.

However, just because the price points are the same, doesn’t mean the offerings are the same.

That said, the HBO Max website states, “Current HBO Max subscribers will keep their existing HBO Max plan features for at least six months after Max launches.”
