New Movies on Streaming: ‘Sanctuary,’ ‘Surrounded,’ + More

Among this week’s new films on VOD are the Zachary Wigon BDSM thriller Sanctuary, which stars Margaret Qualley and Christopher Abbott, and the new Letitia Wright Western Surrounded, which also features Michael K. Williams in his final, posthumous film appearance.

There’s also The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster, a riff on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, where Laya DeLeon Hayes stars as Vicaria, a teenager who desperately hopes to bring her murdered brother back to life. An amateur scientist, Vicaria thinks she can “cure” her brother of his death, and though she’s successful at reanimating him, the man she brings back is a shadow of the person she knew. Written and directed by Bomani J. Story, the film is a strong feature debut that’s a sharp commentary on race, grief, and violence.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Sanctuary

In Sanctuary, Margaret Qualley stars as an emotionally manipulative dominatrix named Rebecca who has been hired for one last tryst with her client Hal (Christopher Abbott). The night doesn’t go the way Hal expects, however, when Rebecca starts making financial demands of him, and their night devolves into psychological warfare more than BDSM.

Surrounded

Surrounded, directed by Anthony Mandler, is set five years after the end of the Civil War, and stars Letitia Wright as a free Black woman named Moses Washington, who is determined to travel to Colorado to claim a plot of land deeded to her. Her path is filled with danger, as she’s ambushed along the way, and so she ends up posing as a man and using her fellow passenger, an outlaw named Tommy Walsh (Jamie Bell) as a hostage to give her some leverage on the trip.
