‘Magnum P.I.’ Canceled By NBC After Picking Up Series From CBS

Magnum P.I. has been canceled yet again, this time by NBC who picked up the series following its cancellation at CBS.

Starring Jay Hernandez, the series is a reboot of the 1980s procedural of the same name. NBC will still air the show’s final 10 episodes sometime next year.

According to Deadline, the news comes as the options on the cast were due to expire June 30. Mainly because of the ongoing Writers Guild strike as well as budget concerns, the network opted not to renew the series.

Magnum P.I. was initially canceled in May 2022 after four seasons on CBS. Viewership was one of the highest for broadcast television at the time, prompting NBC to pick up the show with a two-season, 20-episode order less than two months later.

NBC is referring to the 20-episode order as a split season, a loophole that allows studios to avoid giving cast, creators and crew annual salary increases.

Eric Guggenheim is showrunner and exec producer on the series alongside Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox.

In addition to Hernandez, the cast includes Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill. The first five seasons are now streaming on Paramount+.
