Paramount+ has canceled four series, all of which will be removed from the platform just days before the launch of its unified streaming service with Showtime.

The Game, Star Trek: Prodigy, Queen of the Universe and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies have all been canceled, Variety reports. A spokesperson for Paramount+ confirmed to Variety that the series were canceled and “will not be returning to the service.”

According to an inside source, the decision to cancel the series was “data-driven.” A statement from the streaming service claims the platform is “removing select programming as we look to optimize Showtime’s robust slate of premium originals.”

“As we prepare to combine Paramount+ and Showtime later this month in the U.S., we are refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers. This is consistent with our content strategy since launch,” the statement reads.

Annabel Oakes, who created the Grease prequel series, confirmed on social media that the show will not be returning for another season.

“In a particularly brutal move, it is also being removed from @paramountplus next and unless it finds a new home you will no longer be able to watch it anywhere,” she wrote on her Instagram Story, per The Hollywood Reporter. “The cast, my creative partners, and I are all devastated at the complete erasure of our show.”

This may not be the last we see of some of these series, however.

CBS Studios will have the option to shop around Star Trek: Prodigy and The Game following their cancellations. Star Trek: Prodigy is still set to complete post-production on Season 2 after it was renewed in 2021, though the animated series will not be returning to Paramount+ or Nickelodeon, where it also aired.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies and Queen of the Universe, however, only aired for a single season on the streaming service. Paramount Television Studios will reportedly shop the Grease prequel around.

Other series and movies will also be removed from the platform in the coming weeks, per THR, which reports that the platform is following in the footsteps of Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney by removing underperforming content for tax write-offs. Such a move reportedly earned Disney $1.5 billion.

These four series will be removed from Paramount+ next week. Showtime content will be available to Paramount+ subscribers when the unified service Paramount+ With Showtime launches on Tuesday.
