LA Fire & Rescue, Chicago Fire executive producer Dick Wolf‘s latest must-see NBC series, offers viewers unprecedented access to the inner workings of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Unlike smaller regional fire departments across the country, the LACoFD must be ready to provide assistance to 4 million residents in a wide array of scenarios. Its calls involve anything from house fires, multi-car collisions, helicopter mountain rescues, raging wildfires, and beyond. Viewers might also associate the LACoFD with its Lifeguard Division, which just so happens to be the largest professional lifeguard service in the world.

Led by Captains John Zimpelman and Kyle Powers, the LACoFD Lifeguard Division gets its chance to shine in tonight’s episode entitled “The Real Baywatch.” Audiences will get to see the lifeguards join forces with the specialized Air Ops team during the Malibu triathlon. In this exclusive clip , Captains Zimpelman and Powers watch the struggling participants of the annual triathlon from their vantage point on the shore. “Not everyone who comes to compete in the event is necessarily a triathlete. It’s their first time swimming in the ocean,” Zimpelman explains in a voiceover. To the camera, Zimpelman continues, “Our goal is always that everyone who goes into the water comes out of the water.”

As his fellow lifeguards look for signs of distress among the swimmers, the professionals work together to get everyone the help they need. Thanks to the “gnarly [weather] conditions,” Zimpelman estimates they’ve made “18 rescues.” Powers adds that “every person coming to this finish is getting assistance from our lifeguard.” As the two captains instruct their team to bring the exhausted swimmers to the medical tent area, they continue to direct the rescues at sea as more and more participants need their help. “With the pressures of the competition, people will push themselves a little harder than they normally would,” explains Zimpelman. Tune in tonight at 8PM on NBC to find out if the good people of the LACoFD Lifeguard Division can keep all the triathletes afloat!
