About My Father

Powered by Reelgood

From a son just trying to make his mother proud despite his worst insecurities, to a son trying to live with his father despite his flaws, this week’s new films on VOD have a lot of family strife. The first film I’m referring to here are Ari Aster’s latest, Beau Is Afraid, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as Beau, the crippled-by-anxiety son of Patti LuPone’s Mona, whose death sets the rest of the film in motion. The second film I’ve referenced is the Sebastian Maniscalco fish-out-of-water comedy About My Father, which co-stars Robert De Niro as his rough-around-the-edges father Salvo, who clashes with his son’s new in-laws.

And in Maggie Moore(s), Tina Fey and Jon Hamm reunite for a murder mystery directed by John Slattery, and it throws in a little bit of Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed for good measure. Hamm stars as a police chief investigating the murders of two different women who were both named Maggie Moore. Fey co-stars as Rita, Hamm’s girlfriend who works at a casino, and Mohammed stars as his deputy, and together they help piece together the mystery of why the Maggie(s) Moore were killed.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Beau Is Afraid

Beau is Afraid, the latest film from writer/director Ari Aster, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character, Beau Wasserman, a man who goes on a surrealist adventure (and “adventure” is putting it gently) in an attempt to make it to his own mother’s funeral. Along the way, Beau faces his darkest fears, which range from irrational to completely bonkers. Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Patti LuPone and Parker Posey all co-star in the film.

About My Father

Just in time for Father’s Day, you can settle in with your Pop to watch About My Father, the comedy co-starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro as a father and son who spend the weekend with their soon-to-be in-laws. In the film, De Niro plays an Italian immigrant who defines “salt of the earth” who initially clashes with the WASP-y family his son, Sebastian, is marrying into. Sebastian’s fiancee (Leslie Bibb) and her parents (played by Kim Cattrall and David Rasche) seem too stuffy to be able to handle Salvo, but what do you wanna guess they all become one big, happy family in the end?
