‘Outlander’ Season 8: Everything We Know So Far About the Final Season of the Starz Hit Show

Outlander Season 7 only just premiered on Starz, but we’re already fretting about Outlander Season 8. Will there be an Outlander Season 8? When will Outlander Season 8 premiere on Starz? Is Season 8 really going to be the end of Outlander as we know it!?!

Outlander first debuted on Starz all the way back in 2014. It was a dark time, before there were mainstream bodice rippers like Bridgerton on Netflix. The people hungered for a historic romance full of sex scenes and plot twists. Only Starz’s Outlander rose to the challenge and only Starz’s Outlander has continued to give its audience what it wants time and time again.

So when will Outlander return to Starz with an eighth season? Here’s everything you need to know about the future of Outlander…

Will There Be an Outlander Season 8 on Starz?

Yes, there will be! Starz has already confirmed that Outlander will return for an eighth and final season.

Note that Outlander Season 7 is being split into two halves, with Outlander Part 1 — Episodes 1 through 8 — premiering on Starz this summer. Outlander Season 7 Part 2 will premiere in early 2024.

When Will Outlander Season 8 Premiere on Starz?

We don’t know yet! Because Outlander Season 7 Part 2 was supposed to premiere in early 2024, the earliest we would have expected Outlander Season 8 to premiere would have been late 2024 or early 2025. However, Outlander Season 8 could now be delayed thanks to the fact that the AMPTP has yet to end the WGA strike by offering the Writers Guild fair terms.

“Everything’s up in the air,” Outlander EP Maril Davis told Decider. “I’m a huge supporter of the Writers Guild. But I don’t — like everyone else — know what’s going to happen. It just depends on how far long this goes and how far we push.”

Will There Be an Outlander Season 9?

Alas, there will not! Outlander is ending with Season 8. However, Davis has teased to Decider that she would perhaps like to come back and adapt Outlander author Diana Gabaldon’s future books in the series.

“I mean, if it was just up to Maril Davis, I would love to see this through to the end of the book series,” she said. “Maybe we’ll do a different iteration in the future. You know, maybe we’ll come back and tell the end of the story.”

When Decider asked Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe if they would be open to returning to the roles in the future, Balfe said, “I think you never say never. The door’s always open so we’ll see.”

Why is Outlander Ending With Season 8?

It’s unclear why Starz and the Outlander team decided to end the series with Season 8, but Maril Davis explained it had something to do with the fact that Diana Gabaldon is still working on Book 10 and the series is about to catch up with the books. They would have to pause production for years at a time to wait for future books to be finished and it seems some of the cast and crew wants to explore new creative opportunities.

“You know, people want to stretch their wings and do other things,” Davis said.

“By the time we finished the next season, it’ll be more than a decade,” Catriona Balfe told Decider. “It’s been such a privilege and such an honor to spend that much time playing these characters, but I think it’s also time for us to try new challenges and to have new experiences.”
