After more than a year off of our screens, Outlander Season 7 premieres tonight, Friday, June 16.

The historical drama, which airs on Starz, kicks off its super-sized seventh season following the cliffhanger that ended Season 6. The first eight episodes of Season 7 will air this year, with the second half debuting some time in 2024.

Fans of the series know it’s based on a still-in-progress series of historical fantasy romance novels by Diana Gabaldon, so of course a new season means taking inspiration from a new novel.

But which one? It seems this season might actually be using more than one Outlander novel as source material…

What Book Is Outlander Season 7 Based On?

Since season six ended on a cliffhanger, first and foremost, the new season will wrap up the plot of A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the sixth Outlander novel.

After those threads are tied up, the rest of season seven will likely cover the entirety of Outlander book seven: An Echo in the Bone.

Starz costs $9/month, but you can get your first three months for $15. Learn more here.

Since it’s been confirmed that Outlander will conclude after an eighth and final season, it’s unclear where the story will go with at least two novels that haven’t been covered on the series yet, but reading Written in My Own Heart’s Blood and Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone before it airs may just give you an idea of where the story is headed.

New episodes of Outlander air Fridays at 8 p.m. on Starz.
