Singer-songwriter-rapper Jelly Roll has been on the music scene since 2010, when he started out as a hip-hop artist. In the years since, he has evolved and become a fixture in the country music world as well, collaborating with Lainey Wilson for the 2023 single “Save Me” and winning three CMT Awards in April for his single “Son of a Sinner,” his first song to be released in a country format.

But behind all of Jelly Roll’s success is a battle with addiction and a struggle to handle his mental health, all of which is chronicled in the upcoming Hulu documentary Jelly Roll: Save Me which premieres on Tuesday, May 30.

In the trailer for the film, Jelly Roll describes his ascent from “a street kid that didn’t have any self-worth” to being the global superstar that he is now. The film follows Jelly Roll (real name Jason Bradley DeFord) as he tours the country, while also focusing on his philanthropic work with kids in the juvenile detention facility where he was incarcerated as a younger man.

He speaks frankly about what he calls “the biggest demon in [his] life,” his mental health, as well as all the other obstacles that people told him he would have to overcome to be successful, from his weight to his voice to his turbulent youth, and the result is an inspirational story that’s proof that working hard really can pay off.
