We have some devastating news: Renée Rapp is leaving The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Deadline reports Rapp will only appear in “a handful” of episodes in Season 3, after which she will depart from the series.

The actress addressed the news in a statement shared on Twitter. “College Girls moved me out to LA and introduced me to some of my favorite people,” she wrote.

Rapp thanked series creators Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble for the opportunity, and added, “A lot of queer work gets belittled – but playing Leighton has changed my life. I love who I am 10x more than I did before knowing her.”

Page Six also reports the actress has hired celebrity attorney Bryan Freedman – who was also recently hired by Wheel of Fortune co-host Vanna White – to help her get out of the series so that she can continue pursuing her burgeoning music career.

“Renée wanted to leave the show to tour and they’re currently working out the best creative solution for her departure, but she announced the tour without having clearance from the show,” an inside source claimed.

The actress played wealthy legacy student Leighton Murray, who viewers watched come to terms with her sexuality in the first two seasons of the show. Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Alyah Chanelle Scott also star in the comedy as Rapp’s eclectic roommates.

A source close to the matter claimed, “Both sides have been working to resolve things,” later adding, “There are a lot of egos at play.”

“Mindy is a multi-hyphenate and is supportive of people who want to do different things and play to their talents, but she has to figure out what happens to Renée’s character. This is not the way anyone would have wanted [Rapp’s exit] to happen,” they said.

The 23-year-old is set to go on a global tour across the US, UK, and Ireland, and will later reprise her Mean Girls role for the upcoming movie. Many compared her exit to Olivia Rodrigo’s meteoric rise to stardom in 2021 after she dropped her debut album Sour and left High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

Fans were devastated to hear of her exit from the show, with many claiming she “carried” the series and had “the strongest storyline of last season.”

“I’m gon miss my girls but it’s time to shut this shit down cuz no Leighton is insane,” one viewer tweeted.

“Honestly, her storyline was the best,” another wrote. “I wonder where they’ll go season 3 because season 2 was disappointing.”

Many felt this news spelled the end of the entire series. “I completely understand her decision to focus on the music but she had one of the strongest storylines last season. maybe they will develop the other girls or maybe the show will die,” a viewer tweeted.

For Rapp, this could just be the next necessary step to securing that EGOT she said she wanted back in April.

Sex Lives of College Girls Seasons 1 and 2 can be streamed on Max.
